We think that Sparkle Art goes beyond just wall art, and can be made into everyday items like handbags, phone cases, or in this post, an adorable box, perfect for storing jewelry, ribbon, treasures, pens, and more! The instructions are easy-to-follow and calls for a cute ribbon and adhesive glue to make this beautiful box.

Read on for a tutorial on how to use some DIY magic to make a dazzling and fancy box. This is a tutorial that works with almost every kit design we've created, but in this case, we decided to go colorful using our Diamond Art Deer and Rainbow Kit.

    Supplies

    •  Diamond Art Deer and Rainbow Kit
    • Paint, white or your favorite color!
    • Paint brushes
    • Strong Adhesive Backing (glue, double-sided adhesives, etc.)
    • Wood Box (8X8 inches) (varies by type and size, but MUST have a solid surface)
    • Scissors
    • Ribbon
    • OPTIONAL - Extra Accessories (stickers, extra gems, etc.)

Get Started on Your Wooden Box!

    1. Make the Diamond Art Deer and Rainbow Kit

Bring out your creativity with a dip, dot, and dazzle! Sparkle Art is meant to be a leisurely craft that lets you put the canvas away for the moment or come back to it later in time if you wanted to. Complete it in one day, or within hours, the choice is up to you, just let your imagination run wild!

    2. Craft Your Wooden Box

Paint your wooden box white or your favorite color to give your project a hint of your personality. You can be as creative as you want with your brush and strokes. Paint and then let sit for an hour to let the paint dry! Then after the box is dry, adorn the box with your favorite ribbon. We used a ribbon around the box bottom and the lid. But feel feel to use one or both ribbons because the world and the box is your oyster. Our favorite is a cute iridescent ribbon that helps the Diamond Art sparkle!

    3. Cut Out Your Diamond Art Fabric

After you've glittered your way to success, carefully cut out your design, and get ready to customize! Our fabric frays minimally, so you don't have to worry about mending the edges before placing the design on your wooden box (but you certainly can if you want to). Now, you're finally ready to place your canvas onto your wooden box, using your adhesive of choice and a steady hand. Make sure to lay out the design flat, and smooth the canvas out for air bubbles once placed. Place the Diamond Art Deer and Rainbow on the fabric and apply the adhesive.

    4. Accessorize (Or Don't)!

Now that your Sparkle Art design is placed, all that’s left are finishing touches. Make your wooden box is one of a kind by adding extra accessories around the edges, going crazy with color combinations with additional ribbons, or even adding extra stickers here and there. Show the world how creative you can be with your Diamond Art and show off your imagination with the finishing touches. Let your creativity run wild to your heart’s content, and then muah! It's as simple as that and it’s beautiful. This is a great and unique way to utilize your Sparkle Art canvas to the fullest and have a special location for your jewelry or more!

If you try your hand at this, share it to our Diamond Art Facebook Page or Tag us @LeisureArtsInc for a special shoutout. We'd love to see what's going on in your studio.

    Crochet

Rugs For Kids - Book #75626

Crochet doesn't seem like much of a summer activity, but trust me, these projects prove that notion wrong. This racetrack (above) from Rugs For Kids is the perfect fun and functional mixture of adorable room décor! You get a fun racetrack to drive your Hot Wheels on, and a unique rug that sets your kid's room apart from the rest of the neighborhood. Kids' Snuggies - Book #75678

You can make these projects for your kids, but what's the fun in that? We have some great introductory crochet books like Teach Me To Crochet that will help your little mini-me learn the basics of crochet, so they can help you make these awesome projects! Because what better way to bond with someone, than by learning a craft together?

    Knit

Baby Loops and Twists - Book 75706

If you wanna play with yarn but don't want to crochet, try knitting! We have an excellent guide, Teach Me To Knit, that teaches all of the basics of the double needle yarn craft. There's even fun ways to learn to knit with just your hands! Loop Knitting takes the guesswork of interlocking the twin needles and leaves the beautiful wrap work to your own skilled hands. It's a perfect gateway knitting technique that would be great for children! This Penguin Pillow (above) was made from our book Baby Loops and Twists, and it is just darling. Babies can use it as a fun pillow, and toddlers can carry an arctic friend with them wherever they go! the best part about this craft is that you and your kid can learn together, especially when it's as simple as knitting without needles!

    Craft

    Craft Bombs - Book #7507

The best crafts are the double trouble crafts, the ones that offer more than just one activity and lesson to learn. They are a great way to teach your child to be creative, and they're certainly a helping hand to mom and dad's wallet. Our new book Craft Bombs is a comprehensive guide to spreading kindness, joy, and happiness. A super stash of awesome art and activities like DIY fortune tellers (below) (or cootie catchers, depending on the person), giftable kindness cards, and more hide inside this book, waiting to be discovered.

This is the kind of craft activity that you can create with your kid, and teach them how to be a good human at the same time. Life lessons, AND loads of fun? sign us up!

Bonus - Felt and Paracord Summer Kids Crafts

    Paracord Crafts - Book #6431

This is a section that we don't usually do, but we just had to include it. We love paracord, and all the fun things you can create with it. It's known to be a functional friend while going camping and hiking, but no one ever really thinks about the fun crafts you can make with it. Our book Paracord Crafts shows you a ton of variety with this cord, like bracelets, and fun water bottle holders like this green one (above). A fun summer project that you can use all season long!

    Play Mats - Book #7218

Another fun craft to play with is felt, and just like all of these other projects, these crafts from Play Mats are super easy to create, and super fun to play with afterward! Pick one of the seven interactive felt designs to create and place in the living room for maximum DIY fun, like this Sweet Cupcake Shop mat for the aspiring little baker (above). All mats in this book are put together with easy felt sheets and a stitch here or there, easy peasy!

All of these crafts will spark your creativity and enthusiasm to go out with your kids and create fun and fascinating things while they are out of school and want to have some fun in the sun. If you make any of these awesome projects, be sure to tag us @leisureartsinc for a special shoutout! We just did a live video all about this too, so be sure to check it out on our Facebook Page.

  • After-School Kids' Crafts: Make Crafts & Memories

Craft projects for kids have never been so adorable. In our newest kids' craft book, After-School Kids' Crafts, you'll find 12 playful projects to make memories with your favorite children! Today's Guest Blogger, Rachel Nipper, is here to share her inspiration for her colorful crafts. Welcome Rachael!

Hi there, I’m Rachel Nipper, designer of the projects and patterns in Leisure Arts’ recent publication Afterschool Kids’ Crafts. I have a passion for encouraging parents to share arts and crafts time with their children so seeing some of my projects in print for the first time gives me so much joy! Many thanks to Leisure Arts for helping bring this dream of mine to life.

My love for creating started at a very young age. Every year the night before Easter morning my Mom would set out brown paper lunch bags, markers, stickers and other craft materials on the kitchen table and would give my siblings and I the assignment to create our own Easter baskets. At the time it never occurred to me that we did this every year because of a lack of finances. Rather, it became a tradition that I looked forward to every year. My Easter basket started out as a simple paper bag decorated with stickers and markers but as I got older my creativity blossomed into cutting paper bag strips and literally weaving them into a beautiful paper basket.

It was opportunities like this as a child that created a passion in me for the art of creating and it is something I have tried to pass along to my own children. The joy I felt while creating when I was a child is the inspiration behind the projects you’ll find in Afterschool Kids’ Crafts. I’m excited to share a few of my favorites from the book with you today.

My favorite project in the book was inspired by my beautiful daughter. She plays dress up any chance she gets so I wanted to design a project she could make with me that could be added to her dress up wardrobe and worn over and over again. I layered the felt flowers with different colors and added a contrasting colored button to make the felt headband pop with color.

If you follow my kids’ crafts blog you know how much I adore making puppets. Not only do kids get a creative experience with making the puppet but it becomes something they can play with afterwards. This cute turtle puppet is a fabulous way for kids to practice sewing stitches and it also doubles as the cutest little toy, pushing the little turtle head in and out of his shell.

Growing up I loved having a creative space in my bedroom for me to hang up artwork and pictures. This beautiful unicorn hoop art project was designed with that in mind. Kids can practice their sewing skills and then have a finished, beautiful project to display on their wall.

Another one of my favorites from the book is this simple felt owl purse. Once children have the hang of making a simple running stitch, this darling purse is a perfect beginning sewing project. With so many different color options of felt available, kids will love getting to choose a unique look for their owl purse.

There’s something extra special about receiving a gift that someone spent time creating don’t you think? This was the inspiration behind these darling wooden bead tassel keychains. My daughter loves making gifts for her best friends and these keychains are a simple and affordable homemade gift that children can enjoy making for friends, teachers and family members.

Now that you’ve had a chance to see some of the fun projects in the book, it’s time to get crafty with your kids afterschool! I hope you and your children create fond memories with the patterns and activities in After-School Kids' Crafts.

  • Very Hungry Caterpillar Pencil

Today's guest blogger is Cindy deRosier.  She has tweaked one of the projects from our Easy Foam Crafts book to create a custom creation kids will love.

Screen Shot 2016-04-14 at 2.19.14 PM Easy Foam Crafts Book from Leisure Arts

Hi! I'm Cindy deRosier from My Creative Life, here to share my version of a project from Easy Foam Crafts. When I saw the  Inch Worm Pencil, I was inspired to make a few tweaks to the directions to turn it into Eric Carle's beloved Very Hungry Caterpillar. Enjoy!

Foam Pencil - Very Hungry Caterpillar

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Pencil Materials: pencil, craft foam (green, yellow and purple), red pom pom, scissors, hole punch, glue gun

Begin by cutting the green foam into a long, narrow strip, approximately 9" x 1". Round the corners, then use the hole punch to make a series of holes. (No need to measure anything - just eyeball it!) Cut the green foam scraps to make two oval inner eyes and a roughly gumdrop-shaped nose. Cut two oval outer eyes from the yellow foam, making them just larger than the green inner eyes. Next, cut two antenna from purple foam.

    Foam very hungry caterpillar pieces

Thread the green body foam piece onto the pencil. Leave the writing end free.

Green Foam Very Hungry Caterpillar Pencil

Fold over the end of the body and glue it to the top of the pencil. (If you want the eraser to be accessible, skip this step. I used a color pencil without an eraser.) Glue the pom pom head in place. Finally, add the eyes, nose and antenna.

Very Hungry Caterpillar Foam Craft Pencil
