Just in case you missed it, here’s all the new news that went out in the February 15 Issue of the Leisure Arts Newsletter:
GET ENERGIZED WITH URBAN EDGE CROCHET!
Early in his design career, Shannon Mullett-Bowlsby says, “I had this wonderful realization that, as a designer of hand-stitched garments, I was able to create my own unique fabrics that specifically complimented my original designs. This lightning bolt of revelation has guided me to be fearless when it comes to creating designs and has given me a unique perspective as a crochet designer.” His new Urban Edge fashion book shares some of these design possibilities, including the vibrant green Bangkok Jacket on the front cover. It features a striking Spike-Wedge stitch pattern that enhances the jacket’s asymmetrical lines.
“In the end, I have worked to create a book that includes exciting and versatile designs that are interesting to make and important instructional materials that help you enjoy the process of stitching those designs for yourself,” Shannon says. “I mean c’mon, what is the point of making a garment that doesn’t energize you?” True to his “fearless” style, Shannon encourages stitchers to step up to a challenge. “Even if a pattern is listed at a skill level above your current knowledge, work on the swatch as a way to learn the skills necessary to create the garments. You soon will have the experience needed to make that garment you want.” Urban Edge is Shannon’s newest project book from Leisure Arts; scroll down for more photos and information. Earlier books include And That’s a Wrap! and Heady Affairs, featuring movie-star fabulous wraps and a collection of cool hats.
Valentine’s Day has come and gone, but heart designs are always hot! Any time is the right time to make this month’s 3-D Heart Ornaments Free Project. Whether for a gift or for yourself, this simple design from In Love With Paper Crafts is fast and easy to create using pretty scrapbooking papers and a few buttons and beads.

Editor’s Corner: URBAN EDGE CROCHET
As the designer himself likes to say, WOOHOO!! Shannon Mullett-Bowlsby’s Urban Edge is filled with fabulous fashions such as the trio shown here: A dramatic red Los Angeles coat with ribbon-woven sleeves, a vibrant green Bangkok jacket in a fascinating textured fabric, and a rosy St. Tropez top with relaxed butterfly sleeves. “The visual excitement of the urban lifestyle, the stunning architecture of the city and the versatility and adaptability of the people gave me the inspiration for the designs on these pages and I am beyond thrilled that you will be stitching these patterns for yourself,” Shannon says. To see each design and read Shannon’s inspiration behind it, take our two-part photo tour.

Hey Plastic Canvas People! I know your still out there. I can see the signs of your searches on LeisureArts.com, so I’m certainly not going to leave you out of our Christmas in July festivities…
I’ve got a soft spot for the folks that stitch plastic canvas. It’s the first needlecraft I really learned how to do as a kid (well, the first after my mother tried to teach me crewel embroidery, one grandma tried to teach me to crochet, and the other tried to teach me to quilt—all unsuccessfully). And it’s the first category I worked on when I got a job here at Leisure Arts as a writer. Eventually I became managing editor of the Plastic Canvas Department. So, yes, still a soft spot…
And I know from experience that you Plastic Canvas people like your Christmas projects (they make great little gifts, home décor, and fundraiser projects), so I thought I’d share some of my favorite classic Leisure Arts Plastic Canvas publications with you (I’m pretty sure I worked on all but maybe one of them):
