  • Take I Love Yarn Day To The Next Level With These Projects

Hi makers! For us yarn crafters, our time has come. I Love Yarn Day is approaching (October 12th), and we can't be more excited. For thousands of years, people made their own clothes and relied on skills passed down from their ancestors for survival. Fast forward to today and yarn crafts are mostly practiced as a fun pastime, a way to make money or a stress management tool. In spite of this, skills like knit and crochet are still just as important, especially with the rise of the DIY movement and a desire for sustainability.

I Love Yarn Day is every year on the second Saturday of October and is a day for yarn enthusiasts across the world to share what they love about fiber arts and why they practice these ancient skills. This year’s virtual event, which takes place on Oct. 12, will encourage yarn crafters to share with people in their lives why they love yarn.

In fact, we're so excited that we are celebrating the holiday all month long! We love cozy knit and crochet designs, but we’re stepping up the yarn game with weaving, plastic canvas and home décor too. If you enter our monthly giveaway here, then you can win all of these great goodies that we're about to talk about. So let's jump into it!

    Crochet

Crochet Afghan Revival - Book 7572

Everything Baby Crochet - Book 7575

We figured a great way to start I Love Yarn Month would be to celebrate some of our favorite patterns. We just recently published large collections of our best selling and easy-to-follow crochet patterns, and we're going to show you some of our favorites from these books! Hopefully you'll be just as inspired as we are! We'll start with patterns that always hit big in the fall - Afghans. Crochet Afghan Revival has an afghan pattern for every season, and this plum pattern is perfect for fall (first picture above). It has a great geometric pattern that will keep you cozy during those chilly months.

If you're making for baby this season, then Everything Baby Crochet has, well, everything you need. This Tunisian Cocoon and Cap is perfect for keeping your little one snuggled up and protected when they're dreaming of becoming an astronaut. The texture of the Tunisian technique will be soft on the baby's skin, and the blue color is super soothing.

The Big Book of Crochet Accessories - Book 7578

Amigurumi: An Adorable Collection - Book 7573

If you're itching for some extra fall accessories, then we've got you covered. The Big Book of Crochet Accessories has this beautiful scalloped fall colored scarf (first picture above) that is a great light layer for any outfit. You can create lacy and textured patterns with easy-to-follow instructions! This is just one of the accessories you can make from this book, there are over 40 to choose from.

Amigurumi is a hot trend right now with yarn, because you can make some adorable little and large creations. This turtle from Amigurumi: An Adorable Collection is one of our favorite patterns from the book, but you can make so much more! These little plush animals can be great gifts for kids and grown-ups! Who wouldn't want this little turtle as a desk buddy? He even has a matching strawberry!

    Knit

Another collection of our favorites is The Best of Knit Accessories! We have tons of patterns for you to choose from in the book, but our favorite is this beaded knit bracelet! The accessory doesn't even look like it was knitted together, and the pearlescent beads take the neutral tone of the bracelet and punch it up with blue tones as the beads hit light. You can take this pattern and customize it as you like with different color beads, or with different clasps. This is just one of the ways that you can get creative with a different weight of yarn.

If you're looking for some casual accessories to create this season, then look no further! Casual Weekend Knits has and adorable mustard colored clutch (above) pattern that is fall staple material. Using easy stitches and a little patience, you'll work up this small clutch quickly, and it will last you well past the fall season. You can even line your clutch with fun fabric for a fun surprise every time you reach for your car keys!

If you're looking for a fun project with little prep work, then our Mini Maker Books Plus Kits are for you(video above)! For I Love Yarn Month, we recommend the Knit Hat Kit. This kit has everything you need to make an adorable and comfortable knit hat, needles and all! It even comes with project book, so you're not just stuck with one pattern.

    Extras

Plastic canvas is always a fun go-to yarn project to occupy your time with during I Love Yarn Month. This castle from Portable Playhouse Sets gets you in the perfect Halloween mood! Let the feasting begin as you have your knights gather 'round as the queen looks from her throne. The castle pattern has great brick detail, and even includes banners from two different armies.

Learn To Weave - Leaflet 56062

You can learn to weave fast and easy with this laminated leaflet Learn To Weave! This design in particular has a great color palette, using this blush color as a form of neutral. You can play around with shape, texture, and flourishes as you follow along with these step-by-step instructions. You start with a simple surface like the twig shown on the wall hanging above, and work your way down until you have a beautiful and abstract wall hanging full of textures and tassels.

    Textured Pillows - Book 7450

If you're looking for alternative fall color combos, then this is the pillow for you! Textured Pillows has a lot of great design ideas for dressing up a typical throw pillow, which is perfect for upcycled fall décor. This pillow design also allows you to play with three different textures of yarn. The bright olive green of the pillow pops so well on the pillow, and you can make a similar one with simple stitches and some hot glue!

These are all really creative ways to get crafty this year with yarn. If you've tried some of these projects, be sure to tag us @leisureartsinc or use #leisurearts so we can see what's going on in your studios! Be sure to throw in a couple extra skeins for October 12th, and good luck with your projects this month.

    Happy stitching!

Modern Woodburning is another new release of ours, and you can make cute and cozy home accessories like this mountain range wood slice art (below)! Your children will have fun fishing for felt friends on this adorable mat (above) that can easily be rolled up and stored safely.

    Quilt/Sew

when you make a cobalt project, it doesn't have to be covered in cobalt. you can use it as a geometric accent like in this color-blocked tote pattern from Modern Patchwork!

    Modern Patchwork - Book 7493

Jelly Roll Rugs & More - Book 7569

The same could be said for this bread basket from Jelly Roll Rugs & More (above). There is a really nice muted cobalt dye effect to this basket, and it turns this centerpiece into a modern rustic masterpiece.

  • Color Concoctions with Leisure Life and Lion Brand: Anthurium

We've got new inspiration coming your way, makers! We know you've heard a lot of "New Year, New You" talk from Leisure Arts this month, but now we're seeing red. More specifically, Anthurium! We're kicking off a campaign inspired by Lion Brand's Colors of the Year for 2019! Lion Brand Yarn chose 12 fresh and unique colors to live by for 2019, and we fell in love. Every month, we're going to do a blog post, and recommend some awesome yarn based on the featured color, and fun projects that match the meaning of the hue! This month, we want you to close out January with projects in brilliant Anthurium red, the first color in Lion Brand's List. Here's more on the color!

Anthurium Anthurium Spread - Lion Brand Notebook

"This bright pop of color gets its name from the Anthurium flower, a bloom native to the Americas. The color inspires warmth, strength and opulent texture. The waxy finish on the petals evokes a subtle sheen that seems not from nature.

Bright red has slowly made its way into the neutral palette as it has been adopted into almost every collection of runway designers and we are not complaining."

Sounds energetic! We have the best Lion Brand Red Yarns for this theme (above). Hometown USA - Cincinnati Red is so saturated, you'd think it's pure pigment, and paired with a more somber tone like Heartland-Redwood, it's an unstoppable combination.

One of the words to describe our dashing shade of red was opulent texture. What better design to work with than this DIY chandelier from Crazy About Pom-Poms! • Incorporate Pantone's Color of the Year - Living Coral- Into Your 2019 Life

Pantone has done it again. They've churned out a rockin' choice for 2019's color of the year: Living Coral! We didn't know how we'd ever get over 2018's Ultra Violet, but lo and behold, here we are, admiring another bright, beautiful, and bold color. Pantone drew from nature and intimacy in their color choice this year, hoping that the warmth from Living Coral will "provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment." Too much of our reality today has become digital, and Pantone hopes that the fresh and inviting hue of this color choice  will inspire you to unplug and unwind this year. When the time comes for your own designing, here is the color code and shade range of Living Coral (16-1546).

    Living Coral

Check out what the executive director of Pantone's Color Institute, Leatrice Eiseman, had to say about Living Coral.

"Color is an equalizing lens through which we experience our natural and digital realities, and this is particularly true for Living Coral. With consumers craving human interaction and social connection, the humanizing and heartening qualities displayed by the convivial Pantone Living Coral hit a responsive chord."

The color has already become a popular shade that's being incorporated into living rooms, clothing, art, and home decor. We love it so much, we've already started using it around the office. We all know that the best way to a fresh start is a fresh space, and it couldn't be more true for us makers. Here are some great Leisure Arts tips and tricks on how you can incorporate Living Coral into your 2019 life.

Living Coral + Diamond Art = The Perfect Kit for 2019

Living Coral Diamond Art by Leisure Arts - Lotus Advanced Kit

We love how effortless and easy Diamond Art is, and it totally goes along with Pantone's theme of unplugging from media and unwinding with color. Our Advanced Lotus Diamond Art Kit (above) has the perfect shade range to satisfy your new hunger for Living Coral. The 13 faceted gems make the flower stand out in any room, and give your space that relaxing feel that will put you in the perfect creative state.

Most Pantone shades start with painting a room, or adding an accent here or there. So why not kick it up a notch and go beyond that color on the wall? Happy Abstracts helps you be bold and beautiful with color, and what better color to start with than the new 2019 hue? Go beyond the classic still life and play with abstract shapes and sizes as you follow the projects in this how to abstract painting book. The best thing about abstract painting is that you can make it your own! So this year, liven up your space with bright and brilliant paintings (above left). Just look at how nice the paintings look against that lighter shade of coral (above right)!

2019 will have one thing in common with 2018 : The desperate desire for easy breezy life hacks. • A Feast of Creativity! Fun Projects to Get You in the Thanksgiving Spirit.

Halloween is over, Makers. The skulls and cauldrons are being put away until next year, and turkeys and cornucopias are taking their place! Thanksgiving is a holiday that's meant for endless conversation over great food, and even better company. But there tends to be one thing overlooked every year when you plan for your grand feast : the decor! Decorations make or break the ambiance of a dinner, and for a meal as important as Thanksgiving, you definitely don't wanna drop the ball. Which is why we've got your back! We've put together a few fun projects in all types of mediums that will make your Thanksgiving environment so mesmerizing, no one will even notice that you almost burnt the sweet potato pie.

Look for your category, if you're craft specific, or dive in and try out a project in a new craft! The choice is totally yours.

    Give Thanks With Crochet Goodies

Thanksgiving Crafts Nature's Gifts For Baby Pattern

As any great craftsman knows, the best way to give thanks during the holidays is through home made gifts and trinkets! If you're a crochet lover at heart, then you've come to the right blog post. We've got some nifty patterns for you to try out, and give out to the people you love. Just look at the adorable fox hat and matching blanket pattern that you can make for the little ones in your life (above). This getup from Nature's Gifts For Baby  will be sure to get loads of attention for Fall, and your baby can be cute and comfortable as they're showered with cheek pinches and waves of "awww".

Thanksgiving Crafts Little Animals Headgear - Turkey Beanie
Thanksgiving Crafts Little Animals Headgear - Turkey Headband

If you've got someone a little older that you're making for, check out these Turkey Transformation patterns from Little Animals Headgear (Left). These cute and functional headband and beanie patterns are sure to be a big hit with the family during Thanksgiving Dinner. Plus, if you're not dying of cuteness overload from these pictures, then your heart is made of stuffing, and you didn't eat enough cranberry sauce. The pattern can be adjustable based on how big or small the person you're crocheting for is, so this pattern can be made for a wide age range! It's holiday gift patterns like these that really show that you're thinking outside of the oven for Thanksgiving this year. Not that there's anything wrong with thinking inside the oven, of course. Thanksgiving is supposed to be a day for eating! Which is why we have these next few patterns just for the kitchen.

Thanksgiving Crafts Crocheted Lace Trimmings - Quick Thread Projects

If you've always been known for your upscale Thanksgiving soirees, then this is the project for you. Quick Thread Projects (above) is known for its fun and trendy projects for any occasion, and this Lace Trimming project certainly takes the cake (or pumpkin pie). The lacework can elevate the decor of your event, or give a little extra oomph to that store-bought Jam that you're trying to pass off as homemade (you can't fool me with that unmarked mason jar).

Thanksgiving Crafts White Lace Runner - Filet Table Runners

This project is specifically for the table. Though your guests might not notice it immediately -because they're focused on the delicious buffet in front of them- it has been a traditional part of Thanksgiving decor for decades, and we can't not include tradition in a classic holiday like this one. We're talking table runners, makers! Specifically, this White Lace Filet Runner from Filet Table Runners (above). They've been the perfect pairing to that apple print tablecloth that everyone remembers they had for at least one Thanksgiving, I'm 89.9% sure of that.

Knit Some Handy Kitchen Helpers for Thanksgiving Dinner

Don't be fooled by all of our cool crochet crafts, we have some awesome knit stuff too. These Thanksgiving themed projects make the perfect handy helpers that are festive and functional!

If the funky patterns aren't up to your speed, then try these simple and subtle designs from Dishcloths For Special Days! Modern or Classic, you choose which style is best for you and your family.

Festive Coloring - Fun For Everyone

Thanksgiving Crafts Bountiful Wonders Coloring Sheet

Coloring! The craft that makes you feel like a kid again, but in the best and most relaxing way possible. Adult coloring has become one of those mindless and relaxing crafts that you can enjoy whenever and wherever you want. Which is why you need these festive coloring books for the upcoming Thanksgiving Holiday. No one ever thinks about the down time during family get togethers - when you're waiting for the food to be finished. Even if you did think about it last year, it was probably already too late, and then you became stuck in between channels of boring small talk between your aunts and uncles that will just be repeated when Christmas comes (don't worry, we have Christmas coloring books too).

Thanksgiving Crafts Color On The Go - Welcome Fall
Thanksgiving Crafts Color On The Go - Gather Together

Adult coloring was made for down time, so this Thanksgiving, when you feel the need to be creative, check out the beautiful content in Bountiful Wonders (above header), Color on the Go - Fall, and Color On The Go - Gather Together (above).

If you're looking for ways to repurpose those pages after they're colored, check out our DIY Coloring Decor post we did for National Coloring Day.

Bonus : Thanksgiving Fun with Plastic Canvas

Thanksgiving Crafts Holiday Fancies - Give Thanks Napkin Holder

This is for the festive turkeys that want to go the extra mile this holiday. Plastic Canvas is a fun and addicting craft to start, and what better project to start with than this adorable napkin holder, from Holiday Fancies, perfect for any table. Pair this with your table runners and lace trim, and you've got yourself a swanky Thanksgiving.

  • Join The #HumansThatYarn Movement From The Craft Yarn Council

The Craft Yarn Council (CYC) represents the leading yarn companies, accessory manufacturers, magazine, book publishers, and consultants in the yarn industry. For more than 35 years the Council has sponsored a wide range of promotional and educational programs, including its highly acclaimed Certified Instructors Program, Discover Knit and Crochet classes, and its popular I Love YARN Day event (the second Saturday in October), which offers a virtual meeting place for the nation's knitters and crocheters. They're working on a great campaign right now for Fall that's meant to break you out of your crafty comfort zone, and encourage you to see how yarn can have multiple functional and fashionable uses.

A New Way to Play With Yarn From The Craft Yarn Council

    Craft Yarn Council

Yarn encompasses a wide array of crafts, including knitting, crochet, macrame, weaving, punch needle and much more. But more than that, yarn encompasses a wide array of people. Rather than focus on one specific type of yarn project, the Craft Yarn Council’s Fall 2018 campaign will focus on the people behind yarn crafts. Humans That Yarn is an inclusive campaign that aims to showcase all the different types of crafts that can be made with yarn and the different types of people who identify as a 'yarnist'.

    Craft Yarn Council
The campaign has several goals aimed at making the fiber world more inclusive. One of those goals is to break down the barriers of entry for people who may see yarn crafting as too difficult or uncool. Another is to encourage people who already craft with yarn to take up a new yarn craft. Craft Yarn Council studies have shown that the most common reasons for not participating in yarn crafts are lack of knowledge on how to get started (32%) and the perception that knitting/crocheting (and other yarn crafts) are difficult to learn (28%). Recent research has also shown that 48% of non-knitters and crocheters use yarn in other ways, whether they are wrapping yarn around a dowel for a wall hanging or around cardboard to make pompoms.

    Craft Yarn Council

How To Be The Very Best #Yarnist

Through social media interviews, videos, photography and blog posts, the campaign will increase interest and conversation about yarn crafts. The term “yarnist” will be introduced alongside the campaign to demonstrate that no matter how you use yarn, you are a “yarnist” (yarn artist). For inspiration, ideas and tips for teaching others a new yarn craft, free patterns, yarn project ideas, giveaways and more, make sure to check out our social media pages, including Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest. Tag your posts with #humansthatyarn and #yarnist. Here's some inspiration from us on how to be the very best!

    Get Crafty With Yarn

You don't have to knit or crochet to use up that favorite ball of yarn! Our book, Yarn Crafts is an exception to the typical yarn user, where you can get more creative with your projects and your yarns! Try making string art with just a few nails and wrapping methods, or give that frumpy vase some added flair to spice up your dining room table. The possibilities are endless!
