From Pat Sloan's Take the Fear Out of Color (#4286)
"Safe" Versus "Unsafe" Fabrics: Some quilters only want to work with "safe" fabrics—those with such small prints or such gentle color changes that they look solid from a distance. I think many quilters gravitate to these because they can more easily visualize what to do with them. These fabrics are fine in small measures, but there is a danger that these fabrics will merge together in the finished quilt. And any quilt can be improved by the use of "hard to use" or "unsafe" fabrics (large-scale prints, etc.). So I recommend that you box up all your "safe" fabrics and save them for quilt backs. In this book we're all about learning how to add color and excitement to your quilts!

From I Can't Believe I'm Cross Stitching (#4239)
Floss: Embroidery floss is available in different colors and brands. Each color is identified by a number that varies by brand. If your pattern calls for a brand of floss not available in your area, conversion charts (which give the closest color substitution in another brand) are available on the Internet.
Strands: Embroidery floss consists of six strands of thread twisted together. The number of strands you will use depends on the count of your fabric. Our charts tell you how many strands to use for the best coverage. After cutting a length of floss, separate the strands, and then realign the correct number of strands before threading the needle.
Needles: Cross stitch is worked with tapestry needles. The blunt tips allow the needles to slip easily through the holes in the fabric, and the large eyes make it easier to thread several strands of floss. Look for tapestry needles in size 24 or 26 (the larger the number, the thinner the needle).
