Tree of Life, from Quilt Along with Emilie Richards: Wedding Ring: A Tree of Life quilt can be either a simple patchwork construction or an elaborate work of appliqué. Both styles were inspired by the biblical tree of life that grew in the Garden of Eden. This version of the quilt, like one by Helen Henry, the family matriarch in Wedding Ring, is a classic red-on-white design of pieced blocks.
“Helen couldn’t believe her own eyes. For a moment she stared at the insert in the church newsletter, hoping that she just needed new glasses worse than she’d feared. But even when she squinted, the words still read the same. Quilt exhibit? They were doing an exhibit of her quilts and nobody had bothered to tell her?” (excerpted from Wedding Ring)
Patriotic Sampler, from Quilt Along with Emilie Richards: Endless Chain: Stars and stripes make up ten different blocks in this sampler quilt inspired by a creation of the ladies of the Shenandoah Community Church Bee in Endless Chain.
“Cathy Adams reported that together we have pieced a total of sixty twelve-inch blocks in red, white, and blue prints, and from these we have assembled three sampler quilts some more expertly than others. We hope to raise as much as two thousand dollars auctioning the quilts at the annual Fourth of July picnic. We set to work quilting our third sampler. We were grateful for the work and the companionship.” (minutes from the SCC Bee, in Endless Chain)
